Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to develop. Some come in without causing problems. Others do not have enough room, emerge only partly, grow at an angle, or remain beneath the gums. Their position can make them difficult to clean and may contribute to pain, swelling, decay, or problems around nearby teeth.
An evaluation is the only reliable way to understand what is happening. Dr. Tom Nack will review your symptoms, examine the area, and use dental imaging to see the position of teeth that are not fully visible.
Removal is not automatically recommended for every wisdom tooth. If the teeth are healthy, functional, and easy to maintain, monitoring may be appropriate. When the risk of recurring problems or damage is greater, your doctor will explain why treatment makes sense.

Wisdom teeth vary in position and complexity. Digital X-rays and, when appropriate, 3D imaging help your doctor understand the roots and nearby anatomy before treatment. We will discuss the planned approach, expected recovery, medication instructions, and how to prepare.
Mountain View Smiles offers laughing gas, oral sedation, and conscious IV sedation for appropriate patients. Dr. Brent Woodmansee has additional training in oral surgery and IV sedation and holds a master certification from the American Society of Dental Anesthesiology–College of Sedation in Dentistry.
If sedation is part of your plan, follow all eating, medication, escort, and transportation instructions exactly. The type of sedation determines what preparation is required.

The treatment area is fully numbed. Any planned sedation helps you remain relaxed. Your doctor removes the tooth using the approach appropriate to its position while our team monitors your comfort.
Rest, protect the treatment sites, and follow your written aftercare. Soft foods, careful oral hygiene, and avoiding smoking, straws, and forceful rinsing during early healing help protect the blood clots. Swelling and soreness are common at first and should follow the pattern your care instructions describe.
Call if bleeding is difficult to control, swelling or pain becomes worse, you develop a fever, or you have concerns about healing.

No. Healthy, well-positioned wisdom teeth may be monitored. Removal is recommended when their position, symptoms, disease risk, or effect on nearby teeth makes treatment the healthier choice.
An impacted tooth is blocked from fully emerging because of its angle, surrounding bone, gum tissue, or another tooth. Imaging shows the position more clearly.
Yes, when medically appropriate. Laughing gas, oral sedation, and conscious IV sedation are available. Your doctor will recommend an option based on your health, anxiety, and treatment needs.
Recovery varies with the number and position of teeth removed and your individual healing. We will explain what to expect for your case and when to resume normal activities.
They should be evaluated when symptoms appear or when routine imaging shows they may create future concerns. There is no single age that determines treatment for everyone.
